Thomas Parrotta's Media Campaign

I expected this class to be like any other small english class: go to class have reading assignments & discussions, some in class writing assignments and write essays or short stories. I was partially correct we did almost all of that except the short stories however it was also different than what I expected. It was one of the most unique classes I have taken so far at the Florida State University. I say this because of the fact that some of the learning took place at different locations off campus, some were way off campus. Also because where the outside learning took place differed among most students. This means that very few people had the same or even similar experiences in this class. I knew we would have to volunteer some of our time which to me wasn't a big deal. I just wasn't sure what to expect with where I would be volunteering or what I would be doing. I imagined it would be on campus just helping out but rather it was in the Tallahassee Community. I volunteered at the Tallahassee Museum which is a good drive from campus, so I got to see a lot of things most students don't because they won't ever go there. I thought that the assignments would be a little bit different too. I didn't think they would be set up like they were, all connected one leading to another. I am not sure if I would like it better if they weren't set up this way, but it worked out so I can't complain. So some things were similar to how I thought they would be some weren't.
I feel like my reading and writing has changed a good deal over the semester. I have never really been the strongest writer but I am also not the weakest. I feel like I can only improve with practice and I have in this class. I also feel the same way about my reading. I used to be a phenomenal reader and stopped reading books because of lack of time for it. Practically one reading assignment a day has helped me  get closer to where I once was.
I benefited from my community service in a way most people didn't. On top of just helping the organization I was paired with, I met someone there who was a high school student looking to go to college and now comes to me for advice every now and then when he needs it. So him and his friends are getting insight from someone who has already been through the process he is now going through.
The project that taught me the most was project 3 - The media campaign. I think this project taught me the most because before it I never realized how many ways there were to convey a message to people; also how simple it is to spread a message.
If I designed this class there are few things I would change. I would change which organizations would be able to be volunteered at. I might try to make them closer if possible. But the ones that were selected couldn't have covered the spectrum of people's interests in the class any better. So I am not sure how much I would be able to change that. Also I don't know how they were selected but I would try to better fit organizations to students not only by interest but by capability of getting there. I know people who paid $40 for a cab ride to their organization, I got lucky and have a roommate with a car who gave me a ride.
My experience in this class has showed me that there is more to Tallahassee then just Florida State and Florida A&M University. I will use this in my life by realizing that there is a whole lot more going on around me than just what I see on a day to day basis.
